What is a token?
Tokens are small pieces of text that an AI model uses to process and generate content. They can be words, parts of words, punctuation, or other characters. As a simple rule of thumb, one token is often somewhat shorter than one word in English.
Designer uses tokens whenever it reads your materials or generates something for you, including lessons, activities, chats, brainstorms, and help.
Every request to the AI contains more than what you type. Designer automatically adds its built-in instructions — our pedagogical and instructional-design framework, quality rules and safety boundaries — so that results follow our learning approach. These instructions count as input tokens with every request, so even a very short message such as “hi” uses input tokens.
In a chat or brainstorm, the earlier messages of the conversation are sent again with each new message so the AI keeps the context. Documents and other content you provide count as input tokens each time they are used — for example, when the AI needs your existing content to generate a tailored response, presentation or activity, or when an attached document is part of a chat or brainstorm. Input tokens per message therefore grow as a conversation gets longer or when larger materials are attached.
A 20-page Word document in 12-point, double-spaced type is typically around 5,500 to 6,000 words. Depending on the content and formatting, that could correspond to roughly 7,000 to 8,000 tokens.
Anything generated by the AI counts as output tokens. This includes lesson text, presentations, chat replies, and activities. Based on generated course examples, a quiz might be around 200 tokens, a true/false activity around 110 tokens, and a fill-in-the-blanks activity around 90 tokens. Longer lessons and more detailed activities generally require more output tokens. Where the AI model reasons internally before answering, those reasoning steps also count as output tokens.
Token and image limits apply to your whole organisation: all users and all connected mySleipnir applications of the same account share them. Usage is counted as reported by the AI model that handles each request, so the same request can count differently when the model changes.
